Stumbled upon this little gem, while endlessly perusing the interwebzzz. From Jolby, the collaboration between Josh Kenyon and Colby Nichols, out of Portland. These illustrations above are from their “From Portland with Love” card sets…and I absolutely adore them. The cards can be purchased at their shop, along with other really striking illustrations on cards, t-shirts, etc. on Etsy. I am really on board with the use of color in their work.

I am very inspired, seeing this work, to get back to my own. And to get back to Etsy. I am moving into my new studio this week, and then production will commence, followed by some other surprises I might have up my sleeve…jus’ sayin’. I can’t wait to share the ideas that have been floating around in my headpiece the past few months. The radical sabbatical that I accidentally subjected myself to (via moving and Hunter’s accident) has been an amazing cure for the burnout I was suffering from, but I am more than ready to return to my art therapy. I have been going crazy…very slowly.

Hunter is the mad scientist of note-taking. His journals are filled with a combination of illustrations and writings, all of which culminate to his main purpose of songwriting. There are stylized drawings of Russian philosophers and dinosaurs and worlds all pitted together with lyrics in a lovely bouquet of ideas. The end product is really beautiful!

The only problem is that he will lose track of them and inevitably need a new one until the old one turns up a few months later, rescued from the couch pillows or wherever. So, I always keep a few on hand for him. His journals litter our living spaces, and it is really astounding to see someone so fiercely dedicated to taking note of what is around him and in his mind.

Part of loving my husband is certainly a deep admiration and respect for his creative processes. The man is staggeringly devoted to his craft and furthering his skills. Really, I can hardly describe the past few years..he has artistically developed so much. It has been too stunning for words. It is like we are in a movie montage where the protagonist quickly acquires vast amounts of skill and passion about his particular venture. After listening to, editing, and practicing our new songs with him, I feel confident that the time and effort he puts into his music will shine through.

I never want to overhype our band, or toot our horn or whatever, especially in any sort of written format (hehe) or overpromise/underdeliver (yikes!) , but I think our next album is starting to sound very…promising. It is a direct result of his creative tenacity, dedication, time (sooo many hours!), and the wildest imagination I have ever seen…all of which take root in his journals.

Hunter, keep on rockin’ the free world.

xoxo

I bought some moleskine journals (unlined…i hate lines in a notebook!) and illustrated them for my friends who had birthdays around mine. This is one of three that I completed last week…more to come on the blog later! Anywho, Jenna’s journal is based on her lifestyle (her manz: Michael, her cat, how cute she/they are, etc). Refer to picture below.

Jenna and I actually have the same birthday (don’t even ask who is older, ugh!), so we (and a bunch of our sweet friends) met up for bowling and white russians (in honor of The Dude), and I gave her the journal. I believe she loved it and I was mighty, mighty pleased!

My other birthday weekend events included breakfast at Blue Dahlia Bistro, a house party, chicken fried steak and margaritas at the Shady Grove, and drinks at Hole in the Wall. I got free things all day…it ruled!

My 25th birthday kicked so much ass! Thanks to Hunter, Dawn, and all my other truly incredible friends/family that made it happen. Love you guys!

xoxo

I love fawns. I received one for my birthday, and I will post pictures of him shortly. He has not had his portrait sesh yet. Fawns have long been a part of my life (since Bambi, of course). Anywho, I found this particular little guy at Room Service Vintage here in Austin for two bucks!

He makes me so happy sitting in my kitchen window, next to pretty bottles retrieved from Collin and Sara’s lovely vintage eclectic wedding.

***

Currently, I am searching for a studio space (if I don’t bust out the sewing machine soon, I might pass away), booking shows for Law School and working a bunch. I also recently celebrated my 25th birthday. I feel that quarter-life crisis coming on strong…

Hunter and I both are so ready to not be working for other people. Really, we have been ready for a while, emotionally. But, I guess we are trying to line it up financially, where one of these days our creative endeavors alone can support us. That has always been the unspoken assumption, of course. But, now, I have said it. Verbalized, in cyber space. Now all of you are officially allowed to call me out, when I get complacent with the day-to-day…

I realize our goal is not unique or even unusual. Amongst my peers, almost everyone I know in this town is pushing towards the same thing. But what separates those who accomplish from those who don’t? From what I can tell, it is a combination of ALL of the following: self-motivation, hard work, a support group, time, time, time, and persistence. And not spending all of your money on grapefruit martinis (my biggest challenge on this list–ha!). It is time for us to make it happen…stay tuned.

xoxo

I really owe this guy one, because he designed the original Betty logo, and the Law School cover…but that is not why I featured him. I featured him because we just can get enough of his quirky, whimsical creations. The subjects, compositions, and (oh!) the colors are offbeat in the best way possible. As Hunter put it, upon first seeing the website, “He’s just so much better than so many people.” Agreezy, dude.

Yay, Justin! You rule.

Law School played our first few shows in Austin. Encouraging reception!

Dawn and Joel (our best friends) decided to move to Austin…life-changing. They arrive shortly…

Made a bunch of awesome, new friends!

So, I am sorry that I disappeared like a huge flake-monster. I was about to frrreak out trying to do it all, so I let things slip through the cracks, unapologetically. Mostly, because I had to take care of Hunter and work a bunch since he was unable to. So I don’t feel too bad. BUT I love this blog, and my readers, and the people whose blogs I read regularly…so I am back! But I am going to take my time this time, and not get in over my head.

In other news, this illustration, by Jimmy Turrell is AH-MAZING! And you can see more here. All of his stuff blows my mind! Thanks, Kyle, for pointing me to this…

xoxo,
